Book Talks

What are book talks?

Here is a book talk given by a teacher about kindergarten and first grade leveled books.

Book talks are a fun way to get children interested in books.  They are a summary of the book in about 2-3 minutes.  A book talk can either intrigue the student to want to read the book, or show the student that it is not what they may be interested in at that time.

Your child can also run a book talk.  Having your child share a book talk with you is a great way for them to show what they understand while reading.  It helps the child summarize the important events and key details in a story.

When giving a book talk I tell the children to pretend they are selling the book.  "You really want your friend to read this book, so try to convince them to do so WITHOUT giving the whole book away!
