I have been approached numerous times about what parents can do at home to promote literacy.  It is as simple as reading every day.  Kids love to be read to, and certainly love to show off their reading skills.  Here are some literacy skills we work on in first Grade

Fluency : Reading like your talking.  When your child is reading to you remind them to read like they are talking.  When you are reading to your child, remind them to listen to how you sound when you read.

Comprehension:  Showing that you understand what you read.  Feel free to ask your child questions about the story as you are reading or as he/she is reading.  This promotes comprehension.

Who was your favorite character?

What do you think will happen next?

Why do you think the character did that?

When you finish a story, have your child retell you what happened.  Use key words like.......

First     Next     Then     Last
